Does health insurance pay for a hair transplant?

The short answer: usually not. There are exceptions, though – and ways to make the costs predictable. Here is an overview for Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

The rule: you pay yourself

Hereditary hair loss is generally not regarded by health insurers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland as an illness but as a cosmetic matter. A hair transplant is therefore usually covered neither by statutory health insurance nor by basic insurance. Private insurers rarely pay either.

When there can be exceptions

Whether an exception applies is decided solely by your insurer in the individual case. Always apply before the procedure and get the decision in writing.

  • Hair loss caused by an accident, burns or injuries.
  • Scars after operations, for example on the head or face.
  • Hair loss as a result of another illness or treatment.
  • Severe psychological distress that is professionally certified – insurers decide very differently here.

Questions to ask your insurer

  • Will you cover a hair transplant in my case, fully or partly?
  • Does this also apply to treatment abroad, for example in Turkey?
  • Which documents do you need for the application?
  • Do I have to wait for the decision before the procedure?

How to make the costs predictable

Because the costs are usually paid privately, a clear fixed price is especially important. At Mese Medical you receive a fixed price after the free photo analysis that already includes hotel, VIP transfers, support, blood test, ECG, PRP, medication, care kit and aftercare for twelve months. So you know exactly what to expect beforehand.

An important note

This article does not replace advice from your health insurer. Rules can change and differ by insurer and plan.
