DHI or FUE: which method suits you?

Both methods use your own hair roots from the back of the head. The difference lies in the implantation. Here you can see what that means for density, healing and result.

What both methods have in common

With DHI and FUE the follicle groups (grafts) are extracted one by one from the donor area at the back of the head – without a scalpel and without a linear scar. This hair is genetically largely resistant to hereditary hair loss and keeps growing permanently in its new place. With both methods the final result shows after about twelve to eighteen months.

The difference: how the grafts are placed

With FUE fine channels are first opened in the recipient area, and the grafts are then placed into them. This allows large areas in one session.

With DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) each graft is placed directly into the skin with a fine implanter pen, the Choi Pen – without pre-made channels. The head surgeon sets the angle, depth and direction of every hair. This allows a very dense, natural hairline and work between existing hair.

When DHI is the better choice

  • When a natural, dense hairline is the priority.
  • For receding temples and thinning areas between existing hair.
  • When you want to look inconspicuous again sooner.

When FUE is the better choice

  • For large bald areas, for example on the top of the head and the crown.
  • When a very large number of grafts is needed in one session.
  • Often combined: FUE for the area, DHI for the hairline.

And Long DHI without shaving?

Long DHI is a variant of the DHI method in which the hair in the recipient area is not shaved. It is ideal if nobody should notice that you had a hair transplant – read more in the guide “Hair transplant without shaving”.

Which method is right for you?

That depends on your starting point: size of the thinning area, quality of the donor area, hair thickness and your wishes. Send us four photos – our head surgeon recommends the right method and gives you graft count and fixed price, usually within 24 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, DHI or FUE?

Neither method is better in principle. DHI is especially suited to a dense, natural hairline and work between existing hair, FUE to large bald areas. Both are often combined.

Is DHI more expensive than FUE?

DHI takes more work because each graft is placed individually with the Choi Pen. We give you your fixed price after the photo analysis.

Which method heals faster?

With DHI you are usually presentable after seven to ten days, with FUE after ten to fourteen days.
