What is a graft?
A graft is a natural group of hair roots (follicular unit) with usually one to four hairs, about two on average. So 3,000 grafts correspond to roughly 6,000 to 7,000 hairs. For the hairline, single-hair grafts are preferred because they look especially natural; behind them grafts with two to four hairs create density.
Guide values by Norwood stage
| Stage | Typical picture | Guide value grafts |
|---|---|---|
| Norwood 2 | slightly receding temples | approx. 1,000–1,800 |
| Norwood 3 | clearly receding temples | approx. 1,800–2,800 |
| Norwood 3 vertex | receding temples and thinning crown | approx. 2,500–3,500 |
| Norwood 4 | front and crown, bridge still present | approx. 3,000–4,000 |
| Norwood 5 | bridge becomes narrow | approx. 3,500–4,500 |
| Norwood 6–7 | large bald area | from approx. 4,500, possibly two sessions |
Rough guide values. The actual number depends on hair thickness, desired density and donor area and is determined in the photo analysis.
How much can the donor area give?
The donor area at the back and sides of the head is limited. To keep it looking natural and dense afterwards, only part of the hair may be extracted. How many grafts are possible depends on density, area and hair thickness. A reputable plan also leaves a reserve – in case hair loss progresses later.
Why more is not always better
- Too many grafts at once can visibly thin the donor area.
- A very low hairline can later look unnatural if hair loss continues.
- Density comes from clever distribution, not just quantity.
- A good result suits your age and your face.
How many grafts are possible per session
| Method | Grafts per session |
|---|---|
| DHI | up to approx. 5,500 |
| FUE | up to approx. 4,500 |
| Long DHI (no shaving) | up to approx. 3,000 |
| Beard | approx. 1,500–4,500 |
| Eyebrows | approx. 300–1,000 for both |
How to find out your graft count
Send us four photos in daylight: front, top, back and side. Our head surgeon assesses the graft count you need and the capacity of your donor area and recommends the right method – usually within 24 hours, with a fixed price.
