Washing your hair after a hair transplant

The right hair wash is the most important thing in the first ten days for a good result. With us the head surgeon does the first wash himself – after that, this is how you do it.

The first hair wash

At Mese Medical the first hair wash takes place on day three at the clinic. The head surgeon does it himself and shows you exactly how to continue at home. You also receive the right shampoo and a lotion in your care kit.

Step by step: the daily wash

  1. Apply the lotionDab the lotion gently onto the recipient area and leave it for about 20–30 minutes. Do not rub.
  2. Rinse with little pressureRinse with lukewarm water and low pressure, ideally with a cup rather than the shower jet.
  3. Lather the shampooLather the shampoo in your hands and dab the foam on carefully.
  4. Rinse gentlyRinse again with the cup or a very soft jet.
  5. Let it dryLet the recipient area air-dry and gently pat the donor area with a paper towel.

How often and for how long?

Wash your hair once a day following these instructions for the first ten to fourteen days. During this time the small scabs come off. From about day ten you may gently massage the scabs with foam and your fingertips so that they come off completely. From the third week you can wash normally again.

What to avoid in the first weeks

  • Scratching, rubbing or towelling hard.
  • A hard shower jet directly on the recipient area.
  • Hot blow-drying – if needed, only cold and from a distance.
  • Styling products, hairspray and colouring in the first four weeks.
  • Swimming pool, sea and sauna in the first four weeks.
  • Tight hats or helmets in the first ten days.

Sleeping after the procedure

In the first nights sleep with your upper body slightly raised, ideally with a neck pillow. This stops the recipient area touching the pillow, and the swelling goes down faster.
