Preparing for a hair transplant: checklist

Good preparation makes the procedure more relaxed and supports healing. With this checklist you know what matters in the weeks and days before.

Two to four weeks before

  • Cut down on smoking or stop altogether – nicotine reduces blood flow to the scalp.
  • State any regular medication and pre-existing conditions when you register.
  • Book your flight: arrive the day before the procedure, fly back on day three from the afternoon.
  • Plan one or two days off and a quiet week afterwards.

One week before

  • No alcohol.
  • No blood thinners (e.g. aspirin) without prior consultation.
  • No supplements that can affect blood clotting, such as high-dose vitamin E, omega-3 or ginkgo – also after consultation.
  • No hair colouring and no chemical hair treatments.

The day before the procedure

  • Wash your hair but do not use styling products.
  • Do not cut your hair short yourself – the clinic does this to suit the method.
  • Get enough sleep and drink plenty of water.
  • In the evening your coordinator goes through the next day with you.

On the morning of the procedure

  • Have a light breakfast; avoid large amounts of coffee.
  • Wear comfortable clothing with buttons or a zip so you do not have to pull anything over your head.
  • Leave jewellery and valuables at the hotel.

What to pack

  • Shirts or tops with buttons or a zip.
  • A soft, loose hat or cap for the flight home.
  • A neck pillow for the first nights so you sleep upright.
  • Passport or ID card (German, Austrian and Swiss citizens can usually enter Turkey with their ID card).
  • Your regular medication.

What you do not need to bring

At Mese Medical you receive medication, care kit and the products for hair washing at the clinic. You also get a checklist for the time afterwards from us.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drink alcohol before a hair transplant?

You should avoid alcohol for a week before, because it affects blood clotting and can make healing harder.

Do I have to cut my hair beforehand?

No. The clinic cuts or shaves the hair to suit the method. With Long DHI the hair in the recipient area is not shaved.

What should I wear on the day of the procedure?

Comfortable clothing with buttons or a zip so you do not have to pull anything over your head after the procedure.
